Jean McFarland

She had one year to live. That’s what her doctors said. Jean McFarland wanted to spend what little time she had left in what she considered the most beautiful part of the world: Sedona.
She continued her heart treatments in Phoenix, but eventually found her caretaking to be inefficient, uncaring and lacking results. Plus, the many new friends she was making in Sedona felt in case of an emergency, her smartest choice would be the local heart and vascular experts.
They recommended Dr. James Dwyer, a world-class cardiologist at the Heart & Vascular Center of Northern Arizona a partnership of Flagstaff Medical Center and Verde Valley Medical Center. He offered her the expertise and kindness she was hoping for from the beginning. Dr. Dwyer performed a catheter procedure, which discovered several blocked arteries, which meant she would need bypass surgery. That’s when she met her second medical hero, Dr. Steven Peterson, a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon.
Upon successful recovery, Jean discovered another obstacle (high cholesterol) and the commonly prescribed drugs weren’t helping. That’s where Dr. Kenneth Bescak, Northern Arizona’s only boardcertified lipidologist, came in. He customized a combination of three drugs to lower her cholesterol that saved her life, again.
The best part was all of these procedures were done in Northern Arizona, so all the close friends she had made in Sedona were able to keep her company through the entire process.
To this day Jean appreciates all the doctors and staff at the Heart & Vascular Center of Northern Arizona. And that she will be able to continue to appreciate them for years and years.
